Project Overview

Background:

Viral Hepatitis C is a global concern and is now of a major epidemic size in Egypt, which in most cases leads to death on the long run as a result of end Stage liver Disease \Complications as well as other morbidity effects & decrease in life quality. Egypt has the highest percentage of Chronic infected people in the world (Around 20-25 % of the population), according to WHO & Scientific Statistics.

No effective treatment is available for it and Standard IFN+RBV treatment Costs around 100000 Pound per year with Success rate of only 50% at best. The reasons behind continuous spread in the Egyptian population lies in using of PAT Syringes as the national policy until the late 80 ‘s was the highest experience of blood born epidemic outbreak in history. Also, another reason is the ignorance about the disease, its transmission modes, its natural history inside the patients, available therapy. In addition, the lack of adequate infection control practices, & equipment inside hospitals as well as the lack consultation policies for needle stick exposures in hospital settings could be one of the reasons of the disease continuous spread in Egypt.

The aim of the project is to develop a preventive strategy aiming to protect new people from getting the disease and helping infected people through their experience.
