According to a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural survey, Egypt's share of the world's scientific publications has decreased in the past decade to 0.3% ("Egyptian Science Faces Reform," Scientific Magazine, 7/6/2007). To address this issue, Nahdet El Mahrousa's Young Innovators' Awards Program, in partnership with Misr El Kheir, will be launching the "Scientific Publication Awards" and “Most Cited Award”.
1. Scientific Publication Awards
A total of 50 awards will be given annually to Egyptian researchers and academics whose publications appear in top-ranked international magazines and journals. 25 out of the 50 awards are dedicated to teams that include at least one student.
Applicants are required to submit to a copy of the participating paper, their CVs and a brief description of the impact of their publications.
An advisory committee designed a formula based on the Impact factor of the journal the applicant was published in to determine the value of the award:
Value (EGP) = 15,000 + 1,500 x I.F. where I.F. is the Impact Factor of the journal where the paper was published. (http://www.sciencegateway.org/rank/index.htm)
The money will be a way to further inspire Research and Development in Egypt, foster international collaboration and encourage a larger Egyptian presence in the international scientific community.
Top 10 students, in addition to the awards, would receive a full sponsorship to attend and present at prominent international academic conferences discussing scientific issues related to research and development. This provides an opportunity for Egyptian scientists and researchers to network and exchange information with their compatriots worldwide.
2. Most Cited Award
A total of three awards will be given annually for the most cited Egyptian researchers and academics. Each award is EGP 100,000.
The winners are those who receive the highest score calculated based on the following formula:
Score = (H Index )x100 + Number of citations
A participating researcher has to have an active full-time employment status in Egypt.
Both awards, “Scientific Publication Awards" and “Most Cited Award”, will be publicized in Egyptian National Universities and Science and Technology Centers, as well as in newspapers and magazines.
